What structures consist of the bony thorax?
Sternum, thoracic vertebrae, and 12 pairs of rib
What is the main function of the bony thorax?
Protect important organs of the respiratory system, heart, and great vessels
What are the three parts of the sternum?
manubrium, body, and xiphoid process
What part of the sternum is the most inferior part?
Xiphoid Sternum
What is the upper part of the sternum?
Manubrium
What is the middle part of the sternum?
Body
What is the angle between the manubrium and body?
Sternal angle
How many ribs are considered true ribs?
The first 7 ribs
What are true ribs?
Ribs that are connected directly to the sternum with costocartilage attaching them
How many ribs are false ribs?
Ribs 8-12
What are false ribs?
Ribs that have costocartilage connect to costocartilage
What are floating ribs?
Ribs that don’t articulate with anything anteriorly (11&12)
What is costocartilage?
Cartilage that connects the true ribs to the sternum
What are the two ends of a rib?
Vertebral end - articulates with the vertebrae
sternal end - articulates with the costocartilage
How many inches higher is the posterior end of a rib compared to the anterior end?
typically 3-5 inches
What level is the jugular notch at?
T2 - T3
What level is the xiphoid process at?
T9 - T10
