Q

Explain two Christian beliefs about the nature of God.
Refer to sacred writings or another source of Christian belief and teaching in your answer.

A

Omnipotent - God created the universe and everything in it/ can control the world that we live in resurrect us from the dead/ “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1)

Benevolent - God will look after humans/ he will guide us in life/ he wants us to join him in Heaven; “For god so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16)

Just - God will judge people fairly on Judgement Day, as described in the Bible/ he will decide if we go to heaven, “For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” (Acts 17:31)

21
Q

Which quotation from the Bible demonstrates the Christian belief that there is a life after this life, for eternity?

22
Q

A

Humans will be resurrected; life after this life, for eternity; there will be judgement; heaven, hell; heaven is with God

26
Q

Give two reasons why Christians believe in the existence of heaven:

A

It’s in the Bible; Jesus spoke about it; it gives purpose in life; Jesus went to Heaven

27
Q

Explain two ways that belief in heaven might influence a Christian today:

A

To follow God’s laws so they will go to heaven.
Pray for forgiveness of sins
Baptise to get rid of original sin/ sin.
Follow the Parable of the Sheep and Goats as ‘sheep’ to be on the ‘right’ side.

28
Q

Explain two Christian beliefs about hell, referring to sacred writings or another source of Christian belief and teaching in your answer

A
  • It is described in the Bible… ‘throw them into the blazing furnace’
  • Some think this is a literal description of hell. It will be a painful and unhappy time.
  • Some believe it is where the devil resides.
  • It is for people who have sinned
  • It is for eternity
  • Some believe a loving God would not create such a place or send anyone there, so it is a symbolic description of being ‘without God’, not a place called hell.
29
Q

Give an agreement and disagreement to this statement: ‘The Bible tells Christians exactly what will happen in the afterlife.’

A

Agreement:
There are descriptions of heaven and hell in the bible.
Jesus spoke of the afterlife.
The Bible is the ‘word of God’ so it is true/ accurate.

Disagreement:
Some say the descriptions are symbolic to teach us important things.
We cannot know what will happen until it happens.
The Bible was written at a time for a set of people to understand teachings - it wasn’t supposed to be a literal description of the afterlife.
The Bible is made up of different genres so it isn’t just a literal description of what will happen.

30
Q

Give one way the miracles performed by Jesus and parables Jesus told important to Christians?

A

Jesus’ miracles prove the incarnation - that he is God.
Jesus’ parables and teachings show what they should believe in and how they should live as good Christians.

31
Q

Why is the Last Supper important to Jesus? Give one

A

Now remembered and re-enacted at the Eucharist, reminding Christians of God’s sacrifice.

32
Q

A

Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey

33
Q

What happened on Maundy Thursday (The Last Supper)?

A

Jesus has the Last Supper with his disciples. He tells them to remember his body with bread, and his blood with wine.
He is arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane.

34
Q

What happened on Good Friday (the crucifixtion)?

A

Jesus is sentenced to death by crucifixtion for the sin of blasphemy.
He is killed on the cross, outside the city of Jerusalem, alongside two criminals.

35
Q

What happened on Easter Sunday (the resurrection)?

A

On the 3rd day after the crucifixtion, Jesus rose from the dead.

36
Q

Why is Easter Sunday - the resurrection important to Christians?

A

The resurrection proves that Jesus was the son of God.
It also shows Christians that there is life after death and they will also be resurrected.

37
Q

What happened on The Great Commission and the ascension?

A

Forty days after his resurrection, Jesus spoke with the disciples for the final time and told them at the Great Commission: “…go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”

He then ascended to heaven to be with God, known as the ascension. Christians are waiting for him to return to Earth at the end of time.

38
Q

Why is the ascension important to Christians?

A

The Great Commission gave the disciples clear instructions on how to spread the ‘good news’ (the Gospel) and this has continued today. There are now over 2 billion Christians in the world.
The ascension tells Christians that Jesus was fully God and returned to God in Heaven. There is no body or grave of Jesus left on Earth as he is alive in Heaven, waiting to return one day.

46
Q

Define sin

A

Sin means deliberately going against what God wants.

47
Q

What is the difference between original sin and personal sin?

A

Original Sin - Adam and Eve failed to follow God’s instruction of not eating the fruit in the Garden of Eden, so they were punished and the punishment was to ensure suffering in life. This is known as the Fall.
Some Christians believe that due to the Fall, we have been born with the inclination to sin. This is called the original sin.
Some Christians believe that baptism washes away original sin.

Personal Sin - This is when Christians use their free will to behave in a way that goes against God’s wishes.

48
Q

Give two ways Christians can get rid of sin.

A

Prayer and repentance: they can pray to God for forgiveness. As he is all-loving, this act of repentance means he will forgive them.
Confession: Catholic Christians believe that they can confess their sins to a priest and that God will forgive them through the actions of the priest.
