Q

Young’s Modulus/The Young Modulus

A

a measure of stiffness of a material independent of shape and size of a substance. It is the ratio of tensile stress against tensile strain, within limit of proportionality.

Q

Brittle

A

no plastic deformation/only elastic deformation, obeys Hooke’s Law, σ ∝ ε, break if too much load
eg. glass, cast iron

Q

Ductile

A

deform elastically until elastic limit is reached, then deforms plastically until the UTS (Ultimate Tensile Strength) is reached, where it breaks
eg. copper, gold

A

long chain polymers, extremely flexible, high strain before snapping (long x-axis)
eg. polythene
