Can be broken down into two regions: Cotes, or slopes of the plateau that has clay and loam over limestone.
The western section of the plateau, the graves, has more gravel and tends to have a higher proportion of Cab Franc(Cheval Blanc)
Pomerol Soil
Three terraces with varying soil types. Lowest ara near the Dordogne is sandy soils. The surface and middle of the Plateau gravel begin to accumulate and clay interweaved with iron-rich sand called crasse de fer shows. The highest point consists of clay over iron-rich crasse de fer. Most notably in the vineyards of Petrus and Vieux Chateau Certan where there are thick bands of blue clay. Ideal for merlot production
