Boxer Flashcards
(5 cards)
Quote: ‘I will work harder.’
Analysis: This motto reflects Boxer’s extreme dedication and loyalty. Orwell uses Boxer to symbolise the exploited working class, who believe hard work alone will solve all problems, even when they are being used.
Quote: ‘Napoleon is always right.’
Analysis: Boxer’s blind trust in Napoleon shows how the working class can be manipulated into supporting their oppressors. Orwell highlights the dangers of unthinking loyalty in the face of tyranny.
Quote: ‘Boxer was the admiration of everybody.’
Analysis: Boxer is respected for his strength and work ethic. Orwell uses this to show how totalitarian regimes exploit the most loyal and hardworking citizens without giving them protection or reward.
Quote: ‘He had no tail, but of this Boxer was unaware.’
Analysis: This subtly shows how Boxer lacks self-awareness. Orwell uses this to emphasise his ignorance and inability to see the truth, making him easy to exploit.
Quote: ‘They are taking Boxer to the knacker’s.’
Analysis: This moment reveals the ultimate betrayal. Despite all his loyalty and hard work, Boxer is discarded when he is no longer useful. Orwell criticises how totalitarian regimes exploit and then abandon the very people who build them.
