BPE + 6PPC Flashcards
(43 cards)
Function of the BPE
A screening tool (doesn’t provide diagnosis)
Will provide guidance as to further investigations needed, and may inform treatment planning
Name limitations of BPE (2)
- Relies on pocket depth and this can be misleading (may represent false pocket depth rather than true loss of attachment)
- Fails to indicate the extent of disease (code 4 may be only at one site or or many sites)
Name the probe used to for BPE
- CPITN probe
Name the probes used for a full periodontal pocket chart (3)
- PCP 12 probe (GDC)
- UNC probe
- Williams probe
Description of the CPITN probe
- 0.5mm ball tip
- Lighter lines
- black band from 3.5mm to 5.5mm
the second black band serves no purpose in BPE
Description of the PCP12 probe
- No ball tip
- Has darker lines
- 3mm-12mm
Steps of a new patient history
- C/O
- HPC
- PDH
- PMH
- SH
- FH
Function of a provisional diagnosis
To inform requirements for special tests
Name examples of special tests (6)
- Pulp tests
- Study models
- Microbiology
- Biopsy
- Haematology
- Radiographs
What BPE scores require a radiograph?
BPE scores 3 + 4
What should a radiographic report include? (3)
A description of periodontal bone loss including:
- Distribution
- Shape
- Severity
Classification of Periodontal disease (4)
- Disease stage (severity)
- Disease grade (risk of progression/susceptibility)
- Disease stability (treated and stable or active)
- Disease risks (factors that will impact disease progression)
What are the different sextants for the BPE?
17 to 14 13 to 23 24 to 27 34 to 37 43 to 33 47 to 44
BPE score 0
- Black band completely visible
- No probing depths > 3.5mm
- No calculus/overhangs
- No bleeding after probing
BPE score 1
- Black band completely visible
- No probing depths > 3.5mm
- No calculus/overhangs
- Bleeding after probing
BPE score 2
- Black band completely visible
- No probing depths >3.5mm
- Supra or sub gingival calculus/ overhangs present
BPE score 3
- Black band partially visible
- Probing depth of 3.5-5.5mm
BPE score 4
- Black band entirely within the pocket
- Probing depth <5.5mm
