Brain Anatomy Flashcards
(17 cards)
What does the cerebrum consist of?
Two hemispheres separated by longitudinal fissures
What are ridges known as?
Gyri
What are grooves known as?
Sulci
What are deeper grooves known as?
Fissures
What is the brain covered in?
Cortex
How many ventricles are in the brain and how are they categorised?
4 Ventricles
- 2 large ventricles in the brain (one in each cerebral hemisphere)
- 2 small ventricles in the brainstem
What is the cerebral cortex?
Grey matter running around the outside of the brain, containing cell bodies
What structure connects the cerebral hemispheres?
Corpus callosum
What are the lobes of the cerebrum?
Occipital Temporal Parietal Frontal Limbic
What is between the parietal and frontal lobes?
Central sulcus
What is between the temporal and parietal/frontal lobes?
Lateral fissure
Where do the lobes extend?
On the medial aspect of each hemisphere
Give an overview of the blood supply to the brain
Blood supply to the brain and brainstem comes from two pairs of vessels that form an anastamosis at the base of the brain:
- Vertebral Arteries and Internal Carotid Arteries
These form the CIRCLE OF WILLIS
What do the vertebral arteries supply?
- Brainstem
- Upper Spinal Cord
- Cerebellum
- Occipital Lobe
- Lower Temporal Lobe
What do the internal carotid arteries supply?
- Frontal Lobe
- Parietal Lobe
- Upper Temporal Lobe
- Thalamus and Deep Nuclei
- Retinae
What arterial branches arise from the cerebral portion of the internal carotid artery?
- Anterior Cerebral Artery
- Middle Cerebral Artery
What artery branches from the intersection of the posterior communicating artery and the anterior portion of the basilar artery?
- Posterior Cerebral Artery
