Brain Areas Flashcards
(20 cards)
What are the 4 lobes of the brain
Frontal lobe, occipital lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe.
What is the role of the PFC
Decision making, problem solving, planning, personality, expression, emotional responses, social inhibitions
PFC case study
Phineas gage
Had a pole shoot up through his head
Before the accident was a responsible, intelligent, socially well adapted, religious individual
After the accident he became impulsive, abundant, irrelevant, had obscene language and offended many so much so that he lost his job.
Proves pfc affects emotion
What is the role of the amygdala
Perception of emotion, right is for fight left is for flight, size is correlated to increased aggression and physical behaviour, can help store memories so an individual can recognise similar events in the future.
Raine at al
Compared murderers and non murderers brains
NGRIs has higher glucose metabolism in the right amygdala then the left
Shows amygdala governs expression of emotion but also learning memory and attention
Abnormalities in the amygdala may mean failure to learn from behaviour displayed
Bear
Destruction of amygdala results in lack of fear and in a man autonomic arousal
What is the role of the hypothalamus
Responsible for production of body’s essential hormones. The hormones from the hypothalamus help govern physiological functions such as temp regulation, thirst, hunger, sleep, mood, sex drive etc…
Alpers
A well liked well mannered lawyer who had a tumor on is hypothalamus. He began to display uncharacteristic outbursts of aggression and behaviours that were shocking to people that knew him. The tumor was said to be the cause of the violence
Charles Whitman
Went to a university in Texas after killing his mother and wife and began a mass shooting killing 14 and wounding 31. He was eventually taken down by police and it was discovered he had a pecan size tumour on his head. The argument of wether it was the tumour or the abusive childhood he had still goes on today
What is serotonin
A NT that has an important role in decision making by inhibiting aggressive responses. Reduces aggression by preventing stimulation of the amygdala
Mann eat al
Administered drug which reduces serotonin levels
Them given a questionnaire to assess hostility and aggression
Both were raised in males but not females
Suggests males have an additional hormone causing aggression
Antidepressants
These raise serotonin levels which reduces aggression
Popova et al
Dogs that have been selectively bred for domestication have increased serotonin
What is the role of Dopamine
Feelings of pleasure, satisfaction and motivation, has a role to play in controlling the reward centre
Amphetamine studies
Drug increases level of DA
Antipsychotics
Drug reduces DA in the brain. Antipsychotics reduce the chance of aggression.
Gender bias
Link between low levels of serotonin and aggression in males but not in females. Suggests seretonin acts different in males and females.
What are hormones
