brain evolution and animal models Flashcards
workshop 1 (8 cards)
1
Q
Triune brain theory
A
- developed by Paul D. Maclean in 1960s
- three distinct brains emerged through evolution which co-inhabit the human skulls:
1. reptillian brain
2. limbic brain
3. neocortex
2
Q
reptillian brain
A
- oldest part
- main structures: brainstem and cerebellum
- regulating and surviving
- basic behaviours
- instinctive and automatic
3
Q
Limbic brain
A
- emerged in the first mammals
- main strucutres: hippocampus, amygdala
- helps to keep internal state of body constant
- controls emotions
4
Q
neocortex
A
-emerged in primates
- the thinking brain
- responsible for the development of language, imagination and consciousness
5
Q
three brains
A
- brain didnt evolve in successive stages
- 3 brains dont operate independently
- interconnections through which the regions influence each other
6
Q
animal studies
A
- development of new surgical techniques, vaccines, medicines and treatment
- 20 million animal subjects/year
7
Q
problems with animal research
A
- study desdign and data analysis
- heterogenediity of animals and humans
- translation of preclinical animal trials to human clinical
8
Q
study design issues
A
- inconsistent designs
- lack of randomisation
- lack of blind studies
- inadequate or absent use of inferential statistics
- many trials concurrent or even after human studies
