Brain Structure Flashcards
(11 cards)
Brainstem
The oldest part and central core of the brain
Medulla
The base of the brain-stem: controls heart beat & breathing
Pons
Helps coordinate movement: sits just above medulla
Reticular Formation
A nerve network in the brainstem that plays an important role in controlling arousal
Thalamus
The brains sensroy switchboard, located on the top of the brain stem; it directs messages to the sensory reciving areas in the cortex and transmits replies to the cerebellum and medulla
The Cerebellum
The “little brain” at the rear end of the brain stem: functions include proccessing sensory input and coordination movement output and balance
The Limbic System
Doughnut shaped neural system located below the cerebal hemispheres: associated with emotions and drives
Hippocampus
Procceses Memory
The Amygdala
Two lima- bean sized neural clusters in the limbic system; liked with emotion
Hypothalamus
This small but important structure helps keep the body’s internal environment in a steady state. EX. eating, drinking, body temp.
Pituitary Gland
Master Endocrine Gland
