Brain Structure Flashcards
(12 cards)
Corpus callosum
Thick bundle of nerves joining the two hemispheres. This is how messages travel between the two hemispheres
The limbic systmem
The hippocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus, thalamus
Amygdala
Centre for emotions, emotional response and motivation, fight or flight
Hypothalamus
Process that maintains the stability of human body in response to changes in external conditions (homeostasis) e..g temperature
Pre frontal cortex
The pre frontal cortex is influential in controlling social interaction and regulating behaviour. The PFC has lots of connections with parts of the brain responsible for dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline.
The pre frontal cortex and aggression
Damage to this area often leads to problems with anger management, irritability and impulsivity. The PFC may be more about regulating emotions, so aggression comes from lack of regulation. Dorsolateral region found to be linked to impulse control
The amygdala and aggression
As the amygdala is the centre of emotional response we feel instinctively aggressive if we feel danger . It may produce feelings of fear and stress
Hypothalamus and aggression
Regulates hormones such as testosterone the more testosterone the more aggressive we are
Phineas Gage
Frontal lobe damaged meant his behaviour became irrational and aggressive
Downer
Monkeys amygdala removed the monkeys were more calm
Raine PET scans
PET scans objective meaning they are reliable
Use of animals
Findings may not be generalisable
