16
Q

What are the two types of rainforest?

A

Temperate Rainforest and Tropical Rainforest.

17
Q

Why are rainforests so important to us?

A

They are known as THE WORLD’S LUNGS as trees take in Carbon Dioxide and produce much of our oxygen.

They provide a moist blanket around the equator which helps prevent the earth from over heating

They are home to over 10% of the world’s plant and animal species.

They provide many medicines and it is thought that cures for diseases like cancer will be found in rainforest plants.

18
Q

What are the 5 layers of the Amazon Rainforest?

A

The Emergents, The Canopy, The Under canopy, The Shrub layer and The Forest Floor.

19
Q

Describe The Emergent layer.

A

The emergent layer is where the tallest of the trees are found (50-60m). They are thin with narrow leaves to reach the sunlight.

20
Q

Describe the Canopy.

A

The canopy is a dense layer of continuous greenery about 6-7 metres deep, this layer blocks a lot of the sunlight to plants below and is where a large number of birds and other animals are found.

21
Q

Describe the Under Canopy.

A

The under canopy is the new canopy layer developing through time.

22
Q

Describe the shrub layer and forest floor.

A

The shrub layer and forest floor are dark and wet, where many insects and mammals live.

23
Q

Why is the rainforest under threat of deforestation?

A

Cattle ranching and Crop farming

Mining of oil and Iron Ore

Timber for wooden funiture and paper

Hydroelectric Power

New roads and towns have been built to enable the above developments

24
Q

Looking at Brazil’s population pyramid, state:

The birth rate
The death rate
Life Expectancy

A

Brazil has a high birth rate, due to the very large base of the pyramid.

Brazil has a high death rate, because the sides are sloping.

Brazil has a low life expectancy, because most of the population are not living to old age.
