infxn (s.aureus)
congestive (bilateral breast enlargement 2-3 s/p birth)
presentation of infective mastitis
unilateral breast pain esp one quadrant w tenderness, warmth, swelling + nipple DC
presentation of congestive mastitis
bilateral breast pain + swelling; +/- low grade fever + axillary LAD
tx of infective mastitis
dicloxacillin, nafcillin, cephalosporin
fluconazole if fungal
continue to nurse/pump
tx of congestive mastitis
ice packs/tight bra/no stimulation UNLESS mom wants to breastfeed –> empty breast completely after baby is done, heat, analgesics
what is fibrocystic disease
fluid-filled breast cyst d/t exaggerated response to hormones
presentation of fibrocystic disease
multiple, mobile, well demarcated lumps in breast
often tender, bilateral
usu no axillary involvement or nipple DC
RESPONDS TO HORMONES (cyclic)
dx of fibrocystic dz
US + FNA (straw-colored, no blood)
tx of fibrocystic dz
+/- FNA if sx
usu resolves spontaneously
