What are breasts composed of?
Lobes, composed of lobules
Lobules are composed of acini/alveoli containing ducts
What are the function of luminal and basal cells in the breast?
Milk production and secretion
What are ducts?
Thin tube to carry milk from the lobules to the nipple
What are ducts lined with?
2 layers of cells
Inner cells
Outer myoepithelial cells
What does the stroma do?
Provides structural support
What does the stroma contain?
Blood vessels, lymphatics, adipose tissue
Composed of fibrous network of collagen, elastin and reticular fibres
What is a mammogram?
X-ray through the breast
What is grading?
Degree of differentiation
What is staging?
The extent of tumour spread
What is the most common type of breast cancer?
Ductal
What does tamoxifen do?
competes with oestradoil for receptor
When was tamoxifen licensed for use in breast cancer?
1973
What is Her2?
A member of the EGFR receptor tyrosine kinase
HER2 is overexpressed in 15-30% of invasive breast cancer
What are risk factors for breast cancer?
Age
Age of puberty
Oestrogen exposure
Radiation exposure
Geographic exposure
Diet
Obesity
Benign lesions
What do BRAC1 and BRAC2 do?
Act as tumour suppressors regulating transcription and DNA repair
