Breathing and Respiration Flashcards
(9 cards)
definition of respiration
the release of energy in the form of ATP from food that occurs in every living cell all of the time
aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water (energy/ATP)
C6H1206+602 -> 6C02+6H20
anaerobic respiration (animals)
Glucose -> Lactic acid (+ a little energy /ATP)
- occurs in the cytoplasm when there isn’t sufficient oxygen
anaerobic respiration (plants and fungi)
Glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide (A little energy/ATP)
respiration experiments - testing for C02 using limewater
- limewater can be used to test for C02
- if the limewater turns cloudy then carbon dioxide is present
respiration experiments - testing for C02 using hydrogen carbonate
- hydrogen carbonate indicator is normally orange but turns yellow if there are high levels of C02 present
- low levels of C02 will turn the indicator purple
respiration experiments - production of carbon dioxide by small living organisms
- small organisms cab be placed in a boiling tube on a gauze to stop them coming into contact with the chemical
- hydrogen carbonate indicator or limewater can be used to test the presence pf C02 during respiration
respiration experiments - testing the gas produced in anaerobic respiration using limewater or hydrogen carbonate
- the yeast have been cut off from their oxygen supply to prove that anaerobic respiration is taking place
- hydrogen carbonate indicator or limewater can be used to test the presence of C02
respiration experiments - evidence that heat is produced during respiration
- the germinating seeds are respiring and therefore releasing heat
- the boiled seeds have been killed and therefore not respiring anymore
