Q

aerobic respiration

A

glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water (energy/ATP)

Q

anaerobic respiration (animals)

A

Glucose -> Lactic acid (+ a little energy /ATP)
- occurs in the cytoplasm when there isn’t sufficient oxygen

Q

respiration experiments - testing for C02 using limewater

A
  • limewater can be used to test for C02
  • if the limewater turns cloudy then carbon dioxide is present

Q

respiration experiments - testing for C02 using hydrogen carbonate

A
  • hydrogen carbonate indicator is normally orange but turns yellow if there are high levels of C02 present
  • low levels of C02 will turn the indicator purple

Q

respiration experiments - production of carbon dioxide by small living organisms

A
  • small organisms cab be placed in a boiling tube on a gauze to stop them coming into contact with the chemical
  • hydrogen carbonate indicator or limewater can be used to test the presence pf C02 during respiration

Q

respiration experiments - testing the gas produced in anaerobic respiration using limewater or hydrogen carbonate

A
  • the yeast have been cut off from their oxygen supply to prove that anaerobic respiration is taking place
  • hydrogen carbonate indicator or limewater can be used to test the presence of C02

Q

respiration experiments - evidence that heat is produced during respiration

A
  • the germinating seeds are respiring and therefore releasing heat
  • the boiled seeds have been killed and therefore not respiring anymore
