A

SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus) crosses to HIV
○ It was mutated and infected humans
○ Strains of SIV found in a number of chimpanzee colonies in south - east Cameroon (ancestor of HIV-1)
§ HIV-1 originated from SIVs in different primate species than HIV-2
§ HIV-1: strains M, N and O are closely related to SIVcpz/S, from the chimpanzee subspecies Pan troglodytes
§ HIV-2: strains A and B are closely related to SIVsmm, from Sooty Mangabey monkeys
