What is sovereign?
Having the full and independent rights of self government
Who are the canadiens?
The community of French Canadians living in Quebec during the British colonization of North America
What is assimilation?
The absorption of a minority group into the culture of the majority group
What is a veto?
The right to reject legislation to prevent it from passing
Who are conscientious objectors?
People who refuse to engage in war for ethical reasons
What is an oligarchy?
A political system in which power is held by a small number of people. Upper Canada (family compact) Lower Canada (chateau clique)
What is responsible government?
A system in which a government is accountable to an electorate through regular elections
What is a coalition?
A temporary alliance between 2 political parties
What is tithe?
Money given by members of a congregation to support the church
Who was Sir Isaac Brock?
Head of British forces in Canada in the war of 1812
Who was Tecumseh?
A Shawnee First Nation leader who was an ally to the British
Who was Lord Durham?
The Governor General who was sent to canada after the rebellions in 1837 to determine what the problems were
What was the Sermen du test?
An oath to the Anglican Church that the Catholics had to take if they wanted to be a part of the government. Shows how little power they had, and how British controlled and wanted to get rid of French culture
What are some British challenges after the seven years war?
British didn’t trust French, thought they were going to rebel and become allies with Americans. British ignored FN and didn’t want anything to do with them
What did Louis-Joseph Papineau and William Lyon Mackenzie do?
They both used newspapers to spread word about the reform
Who was Governor James Murray and Sir Guy Carleton?
James was the first Governor General of Quebec, Guy was the second. Believed in French culture and wanted to preserve it. Wanted to keep French happy so they didn’t rebel, so they made the Quebec Act in 1774
Who was Laura Secord?
Representative of Canadian women. She overheard talk and warned the British that the Americans were going to attack
Describe Pontiac’s resistance:
FN faced hardships from the British, so Pontiac (French ally) rallied tribes in the ohio valley against British. It was effective, and FN controlled all the forts expect 3
What ended the resistance?
Peace treaty in 1766, protected FN hunting grounds and recognized that they owned the ohio valley
Who were the loyalists?
People who remained loyal to the British during war of independence. They created New Brunswick, new English speaking colonies, and demanded democratic rights
Describe the constitutional act:
1791, recognized 2 distinct groups, English and French. Each could practise their own religion, language, and have their own civil and property laws, split Quebec into upper and lower. Each had a governor, legislative, and executive council
Describe the Royal Proclamation:
Protected FN hunting grounds, British controlled ohio valley, established Quebec, French civil laws abolished, no tithe or tax, Sermen du test. British wanted French culture gone to promote British immigration
What caused the American War of Independence?
13 colonies were mad at the amount of taxes they had to pay for the British military, colonists thought they should have more say in government, mad at the loss of the ohio valley to the French after the Quebec act
What caused the rebellion in upper canada?
They didn’t want immigrants, uneven distribution of power, used tax money for things that didn’t benefit the citizens
