Common bile duct
hepatic duct merges with the cystic duct to form the common bile duct, opens into the duodenum
location of the major duodenal papilla
7-10 cm below the pyloric opening from the stomach
function of the gall bladder
stores bile, concentrates bile fivefold to tenfold, contracts and ejects bile into the duodenum
Pancreas size
12- 15 cm / 60 gr
pancreas location
runs from the duodenum, behind the stomach, touching the spleen
pancreas structure
composed of endocrine and exocrine glandular tissue; resembles a fish - head, c shaped neck, and tail
functions of the pancreas
exocrine pancreatic cells (acinar units) secrete digestive enzymes (pancreatic juices), beta cells secrete insulin, Alpha (endocrine) cells secrete glucagon
Digestion
breakdown of complex nutrients into simple nutrient
1) mechanical digestion - physicaly breaks large chunks into small bits,
2) chemical digestion- breaks molecules apart
Absorbtion
movement of nutrients through the GI mucosa into the internal enviroment
Hydrolysis
is a chemical process in which a compound unites with water and then spilts into simpler compounds
Substances in Gastric juice
Pepsin, Hydrochloric acid, Intrinsic factor, mucus & water
Substances in Pancreatic juice
Proteases {(trypsin, chymotrypsin, colagenase, elastase, etc) proteins}, lipases {(lipse, phospholipase, etc) lipids}, Colipase, Nucleases, amylase, water, mucus, sodium bicarbonte
