Change
It is inevitable, everything is constantly changing gradually and daily
No permanent identity
Abandon egotism and materialism, there are little parts in everything that make one thing a whole, and those parts are always changing too
Suffering
AKA: Dukkha, when life is lived conventionally you can never be satisfied because of change, no one can avoid suffering but it’s how you look at it and handle it, be happy with what you have
4 noble truths
- ) all life is full of suffering, pain, and sorrow
- ) the cause of suffering is the desire for things that are just illusions; such as riches, power, and long life
- ) the only cure for suffering is to overcome those desires
- ) the way to overcome those desires is to follow the eightfold path
Eightfold path
Right views, aspirations, speech, conduct, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and contemplations
Nirvana
Union it’s the universe and a release from the cycle of rebirth
-lotus flower: represents blooming of mind towards enlightenment
Theravada Buddhism
Most conservative school of Buddhism, tries to maintain historical tradition, says nirvana is only possible with monks, they WEAR ORANGE ROBES, monks beg for their food daily, stuppa (remains of Buddha and enlightened monks are in it)
Mahayana Buddhism
“Big vehicle”, accommodates a wide variety of people, nirvana is possible for everyone, concept of karuna (compassion), the ideal person is a bodhisattva (enlightened being)
