Enlightenment
To realise the truth about something
Sadhu
Hindu holy man, has no possessions and wanders from town to town meditating and teaching
Dukkha
This is anything which is imperfect which leads to suffering
Nirvana
‘Blowing out’ the fires of greed, hatred and ignorance, and the stat of perfect peace that follows
Three Poisons
Greed, hatred, ignorance: three human flaws believed to cause Dukkha
The Five Precepts
An ethical system of general rules that focuses on intention and changing your behaviour over leading you away from immoral action
The Three Refuges
These are places in the Buddha, oneself and your community where you can go for safety and escape from suffering as you attempt to cultivate goodness within oneself
Meditation
This is a mean of getting used to your true nature by concentrating on the present reality
Middle Way
A Buddhist concept where we should not live a life of excesses which was explained in more detail as The Noble Eightfold Path
Right
The correct and best possible way of doing something
Livelihood
A job, a way of securing what you need in life
The Buddha (refuge)
As one of the three refuges, he is a guide and teacher to help you cultivate goodness in oneself and achieve enlightenment
The Dhamma (refuge)
This refers to the scriptures, often interpreted as the teachings of the Buddha which allow one to cultivate goodness
The Sangha (refuge)
These are your community/lay people who you can find help in to achieving enlightenment
Annica
The belief that there is nothing in the world that is permanent, everything is changing
Dukkha
Because everything is changing nothing in life is perfect, nothing can bring true happiness
Anatta
Means ‘no self’, there is no eternal unchanging soul, we are just a collection of changing characteristics, there is no such thing as a soul
Precept
A general rule to control one’s behaviour
Rebirth
Existing soul begins life in a new body
Samsara
The cycle of birth, death and rebirth
Kamma
This means action. It refers to law of action and result
