A

Periods of eating with no sense of control followed by purging, use of laxatives, diuretics or excessive exercise.

Purging and non-purging (exercise induced).

What are the signs and symptoms of BN?

A

Normal - slightly overweight
Binge eating
Often follows anorexia or other diets
Frequent weight change
Depression etc
Erratic menstrual cycle
Frequent trips to toilet after meals
Sore throat, tooth erosion, swollen parotid gland
Reluctance to socialise around food

What are the risk factors for BN?

A

Weigh control - internal or external
Shift work
High alcohol
Glucose/food intolerance
Low self esteem
Obesity/body dysmorphia

How would you minimise harm to a BN client?

A

Encourage bicarb mouth wash for teeth and acid reflux
Educate re laxatives
Refer to necessary support - alcohol/drugs
Orthodox: SSRIs, proper eating patterns
