Burgundy: Côtes de Nuits Villages Flashcards
(42 cards)
What 4 french Départements does Burgundy wine region stretch across?
Yonne
Côte d’Or
Saône et Loire
Rhône
comprises nearly 30,000 Hectares not inlcuding Beaujolais (making it smaller than Rhone, Bordeaux or Champagne comparatively)›

Wines of Chenôve are produced under what AOC?
What are the4 climats of Chenôve?
Wines are produced under Marsannay AOP (as are the wines of Couchey)
the 5 Climats Villages are:
La Chapitre
Le Village (LieuDits - Clos de l’Étoile)
Les Chenevary (Clos Monniaux)
Cos du Roy
Bas du Clos

What are the Lieux-Dits of the Chenôve climats Le Village and Les Chenevary
Le Village - Clos d l’Étoile and PART of Clos Monniaux.
Les Chenevary - Clos Monniaux
these are used for Marsannay Rosé

What is a “buffer yield” in burgundy?
Each appellation has a maximum base yield (rendement de base) as defined by legislation (in hl/ha)
the base yield may be augmented by beween 15% and 20% in a given year. This decision depends on the conditions obtained that year given the vintage, and the grower must obtain permission to do so.
Base max yields should represent the 10 year average - which could be a defining factor on permission
What is the standard max rendement de base in burgundy?
Grand Cru:
R - 35-37 hl/ha
W - 40-64 hl/ha
Premier Cru:
R - 40-45 hl/ha
W - 45-68 hl/ha
Village:
R - 50-69 hl/ha
W - 55-75 hl/ha
What is Bourgogne Le Chapitre?
It is a climat of Chenôve that is allowed to append it’s deographic designation to the label
Produced as Bourgogne Le Chapitre for W/R or Bourgogne Rosé Le Chapitre for pink
if it doesnt append the climat name, it would be produced under Marsannay AOP (since Chenôve does not have it’s own AOP - same goes for Couchey to the south of Marsannay)

Which climats of Chenôve are approved for production of Marsannay Rosé? (and their respective Lieu Dits
Le Village (l/d; Clos de l’Étoile and Clos Monniaux
Le Chenevary (l/d; Clos Monniaux)
Bas du Clos
(Le Chapitre as well, but it appends its name and becomes Bourgogne Rosé Le Chapitre)

which climat of Chenôve is produced for Marsannay Red and White?
Clos du Roy

What are the communes of Production for Marsannay AOP
Marsannay-la-Côte
Chenôve
Couchey

What major villages of Côte d’Or have no premier cru vineyards
Côte de Nuits:
Marsannay (and by proxy, Chenôve and Couchey)
Comblanchien
Corgoloin
Côte de Beaune:
Saint Romain
What are the producing communes for Côtes de Nuits-Village AOC
What are their possible declassification AOPs
Fixin
Brochon
Prémeaux-Prissey
Comblanchien
Corgoloin
These wines could be declassfied as Coteaux Bourguignons AOC or Bourgignon AOC
What can be said, in general, about vineyards allowed for production of Marsannay Rosé AOP
(shown in pink in the photo)
The are sourced from communes of Chenôve, Marsannay la Côte, and Coucey
the main vineyards run a north to south course thru the heart of burgundy along the “Route des Grand Crus”, (seen in yellow in the photo) and the vineyards destined for Rosé here are mostly east of that road, or to the furthest west of the main red/white vineyards

Combes is seen in a lot of vineyard names in Burgundy - what does it mean?
Combes means “side Valley” in regards to the vineyard and aspect.
A steep narrow valley, or a small valley or large hollow on the side of a hill - but mostly understood to mean a valley in which a watercourse does not run.

Explain the emergence of Marsannay AOP from simple Bourgogne wines to its own appellation pushing for 1er crus
Until 1965, marsannay was only lableed Bourgogne Rouge, afterward they could label the wines Bourgogne Roude de Marsannay.
Côte de Nuits Village co-producing-communes of Fixin, Brochon, Corgoloin and Comblanchien pushed to block their effort to become their own AOC in the CdN standing, but in 1987 they lost that battle and Marsannay was approved for all 3 colors of wine. (sourcing from Chenôve to the North, and Couchey to the South all labeled under Marsannay)
There is now a push to combine 24 different Lieu-Dits into 14 different 1er Crus
What is the only climat of Chenôve that is being pushed for 1er cru status?
Clos du Roy
(for red and white wines under Marsannay AOP)

What is Au Champ Solomon?
A proposed 1er cru for Marsannay AOC
it is on the boarder of Marsannay-la-Côte/Couchey
From Couchey
proposes combining:
En Clémongeot
Au Champ Salomon

what vineyards of Marsannay are being individually propesed as their own 1er cru for Marsannay AOP?
- En La Montagne
- Les/Es Chezots (actual lieu-dit name is Les Echezeaux!)
- La Charmes aux Prêtres (which includes Les Rosey)
- Les Boivin
- Les Grasses Têtes
- Les Clos de Jeu
- Saint-Jacques (part of it)
- Le Favières

What is Champs Perdrix
it is a vineyard in Couchey, labeled as Marsannay AOC
It is also a proposed 1er cru for Marsannay comprising 5 vineyards, all from Couchey:
Au Quartier
La Plantelle
Le Désert
Le Moisereau
and Champs-Perdrix

which single vineyard climats of Couchey is proposed as its own 1er cru for Marsannay AOC
how many other proposed 1er cru are located in Couchey
Les Clos
Couchey has 3 other 1er Cru proposition, each of them would combine more than one vineyard together:
Au Champs Salomon (2 vineyards), Aux Genelières (8 vineyards), Champs Perdrix (5 vineyards)

two of the 9 proposed 1er cru for Marsannay AOC form Marsannay-La-Cote are not already single vineyard lieu-dit/climats
What are they?
1. Les Longeroies -
Which will inlcude Marsannay communes of:
Bas des Longeroies, Dessus del Longeroies and Monchenevoy
2. La Charme aux Prêtres -
which includes Les Rosey and La Charmes aux Prêtres

of the 14 proposed 1er cru for Marsannay AOC - what do they have in common?
All located on the upper middle parts of the Marsannay (Chenôve and Couchey) vineyards, at altitudes between 280 and 330 meters
Principally vineyard aspects are south, south east, east facing sharing the classic profile of the rest of Côte de Nuits.
The push to approve the 1er cru vineyards for Marsannay AOC has a greater goal beyond the well-placed desire to promote the quality wines of the village.
What is the aim?
Some parcels, for example Champs Forets (Champsforey/Champs Forey) are placed close to housing, and elevating vineyards would make it harder for town planners to rezone the use of the land for “building land” thus protecting vineyard land.
Where can you find Rosé wines in CdN
Marsanny is the only village permitted to produce it, sourcing grapes from Marsannay la Cote, Chenôve to it’s north and Couchey to it’s south.
You will also see Rosé produced under Bourgogne, and in the south of burgundy you will find Beauolais Villages Rosé

Why is it that we see Rosés produced at the village level in Marsannay?
Joseph Clair pioneered them in the early 1900’s, since the whites and reds of the region were so hard to sell given the fame of neighboring villages, he marketed rosés with much success and it has become tradition. The wines tend to mirror the white wines of the region, showing richness over freshness, and can have surprising longevity
