Business Hardware Chapter 4 Flashcards
(33 cards)
Hardware
physical components of computers and related electronic devices
CPU
Accepts decodes and execute instructions
Internal memory
Stores data and instructions just before and after cpu process them
Motherboard
A circuit board containing the cpu and primary memory
Bit
Binary digit 0 or 1
Byte
A combination of eight bits (binary code)
What is a Supercomputer?
Most powerful computer at any given time
What is Parallel processing?
Multiple processors running simultaneously
What is the purpose of Mainframe computers ?
Store large amount of data and business transactions
Technology convergence
Building several technologies into a single piece of hardware
What are the five components of every computer?
- input
- output
- Cpu
- internal memory
- storage
What do output devices do?
Output devices deliver information from the computer to the user
What is a workstation?
A Powerful pc is called a workstation.
What are the purpose of workstations?
Workstation are used commonly for the design and manufacturing
Input devices
Receive signals from outside of computer and transfer them into the computer.
Multicore processors
processors that combine two or more CPUs or “cores” on a single chip
Multithreading
processing more than one program, or several parts of a program, at the same time
Machine cycle
Is four operations performed by the CPU such as : Fetch, decode, execute and store
CPU clock
special circuitry on the processor that synchronizes all tasks
Clock rate
number of pulses per second
A machine cycle takes several clock pulses
What is the alu?
the part of the CPU that performs arithmetic and logical operations
Define data word
maximum number of bits that the control unit can fetch from primary memory in a single machine cycle
Bus
electronic lines or traces used for communication inside computer
Throughput
number of bits per second that the bus can accommodate
