words that end in “e” don’t change whether the person is male or female
use “piacere” when you meet someone for the first time
you use “vivo a +your city” for where you live and “soon di + your city” for where you are from
use “ciao” for friends, family, and informal situations
use “buongiorno” for elderly, strangers, and formal situations
the “L” in “Lei” (formal you) is always a capital
as you learn italian, you will discover that these five vowels are key to understanding if a word refers to a man or woman, a person or group of people, and yourself or someone else
“lei”, “lei”, “tu”, and “io” are singular personal pronouns because they only refer to one person
when it’s clear who were are talking about, we can often skip the personal pronouns. to sound more natural we often skip personal pronouns
io sono russa > sono russa (i’m russian)
tue sei americano? . sei americano? (are you american?)
to talk about someone’s name, we say “si chiama (he/she is called)”. we use this for both women and men
to introduce a woman we say “questa è Jen” (this is Jen), for a man we say “questo è Filippo” (this is Filippo)
you can build the verb form of “abitare” in two easy steps.
step 1: remove the three final letters (“-are”). the part of the word that is left is called the “stem” and it doesn’t change.
step 2: at the end of the stem (“abit”), add the correct ending (“o” or “i”) for the person you are talking about
