Hesperiidae
A family of butterflies known as skippers.
Papilionidae
A family of butterflies known as swallowtails. There is only one species in the UK - the (Old World) swallowtail (Papilio machaon).
Pieridae
A family of butterflies known as whites and yellows, including orange-tip, clouded yellow and brimstone.
Riodinidae
A family of butterflies known as metalmarks. There is only one species in the UK - the Duke of Burgundy (Hamearis lucina).

A family of butterflies known as blues, hairstreaks and coppers.
Nymphalidae
A family of butterflies known as brush-footed butterflies, including emperors, vanessids, fritillaries and browns.
Satyrinae
A subfamily of butterflies (family Nymphalidae) known as browns. Most species feed on grasses, and most have eyespots on the wings. Includes the marbled white (Melanargia galathea).
