Who was Hitler?

What were Hitler’s foreign policies?

What was Lebensraum?
Living space, Hitler wanted land in the East and he would have to invade
What was rearmament?
Hitler wanted to introduce conscription and a Luftwaffe to reduce unemployment and give Germany military strength
What was Volksdeutsche?
Hitler wanted to make a Greater Germany and unite all German speaking people
Why did Hitler want to destroy communism?
Karl Marx, a Jew, developed Communism and Hitler was concerned it would destroy Germany
Who was Neville Chamberlain?
British Prime Minister from 1937-1940
What was Britain’s reaction to Hitler’s foreign policies?
When Hitler signed the non-aggression pact with Poland in 1934, British politicians were satisfied
What did Chamberlain do in 1937?
In November 1937, Lord Halifax was sent to meet Hitler and ask what he wanted
What policy against Hitler did Chamberlain adopt?
Appeasement - giving Hitler a little of what he wanted to stop a full-blown war

President of France for the 1930’s
What was the French reaction to Hitler’s foreign policies?
After the Depression, some had started rebelling. France couldn’t act without British support

Dictator of the Communist USSR
What was the USSR’s relationship with the West?
Very hostile until 1934 when the USSR joined the League of Nations. Improved further in May 1935 when France and the USSR signed a treaty of mutual assistance

American President in 1930s
What was isolationism?
Throughout the 1920s, America followed isolationism, meaning they didn’t interfere with European affairs
What was America’s reaction to Hitler’s foreign policies?
In 1936 election, FDR promised to keep America out of European wars. In 193, FDR tried to convince Hitler to promise to not invade countries, he failed, so America started to prepare armed forces
When and why did Germany leave the League of Nations?
1933 - Hitler walked out of the Disarmament Conference because other countries wanted Germany to disarm but wouldn’t disarm themselves
Who was Englebert Dollfuss?
- Austrian chancellor in 1932
- March 1933, he shut down parliament and banned the Austrian Nazi Party
- tried to become a Fascist dictator and modelled it after Mussolini and they became allies
What was the Dollfuss affair?
Germany had ruled Austria for 600 years and many felt the true countries should be joined. But Anschluss was banned in the TofV. Hitler wanted to join the two together but Dollfuss banned Nazis in Austria. In 1934, Austrian Nazis murdered Dollfuss. The Austrian army and Mussolini rallied troops against Hitler and he backed down
What was the Saar plebiscite?
The Saar was a rich industrial area given to the League of Nations for 15 years. In January 1935 the agreement expired and a plebiscite was held on 13 January who should govern the area: France or Germany. 90% voted Germany and Hitler gained rich coalfields to fuel rearmament
What was the Freedom to Rearm rally?
In March 1935, Hitler showed off weapons and troops he has secretly been building and announced he was introducing conscription, expanding the army to one million and building a Luftwaffe
What was the Stresa Front?
Signed in April 1935, was an agreement between Britain, France and Italy that stated:
- guarantee the Locarno Treaty
- protect Austrian independence
- stop Hitler
