What was Jamestown and why did it have problems in the beginning?
Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America. They struggled because most of the people there were adventurers and did not know how to farm.
Who is John Smith and how does he change the fortunes of the colonists?
John Smith owned Jamestown for a while. He made the men work harder so they could get better homes and food.
How do the Powhatan’s help?
Smith convinces them to trade food for their pots, tools, etc.
What was the “Starving Time”?
In 1609, more colonists started to arrive and the Powhatan’s then saw them as a threat. They would not let the colonists get materials outside of Jamestown. Then in the winter, famine and disease hit the colony. By spring, only 60 colonists were left.
What does John Rolfe do?
He introduced a new type of tobacco that sold well in England so that they could earn some profit. He also married Pocahontas, daughter of the Native American chief. She died 3 years later.

What was Bacon’s rebellion?
He did not agree with trade with the Native Americans and he thought that they should take their land. But his rebellion ended when he died of fever.
How does Maryland get established?
The people who moved there copied what Jamestown learned.

This made it legal to practice christianity. This started the freedom of religion.

Laws to control slaves.

They were Protestants. They wanted to purify the church from power.
What happens to the Pilgrims? Why do they leave the Netherlands? Where do they go?
They leave England because of persecution. They start loosing their heritage in the Netherlands, so they move to the New World (America).
What was the Mayflower Compact? What does it represent?
It is a set of rules/laws for the people to sign and follow. It represents the start of self-government.

What role do Native Americans play in helping the Pilgrims? Do you think they regret it?
They gave the Pilgrims useful info on the people and area. They taught the Pilgrims how to make their soil better. But the Pilgrims brought disease that the Native Americans did not know how to cure, so they might have regretted it.
What were the fundamental orders of Connecticut?
They outlined the “powers of general courts” and non-church members could vote.
Who was Anne Hutchinson?
She was a woman that spoke her mind about the religion out loud. She did not think they needed ministers to guide their relationship with God. She was then banished to Rhode Island.

New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts
What was the economy of NE?
Merchants, fishing, ship building, skilled craftspeople, etc were important.
Who were the Quakers? What did they believe?
The Quakers were one of the largest religious groups in New Jersey. They believed in different lifestyles, more equality before God, and supported non-violence. They were mainly persecuted in England, but they faced some persecution in the New World (America) too.
Who was William Penn? What did he do? What type of government does he start?
He was a Quaker. He founded a colony (Pennsylvania) where the Quakers would be safe from persecution. He limited his own power and made sure that everyone, not just the Quakers, had religious freedom as well. He creates a self-government colony. (Yay!)
