What is a element?
A Substance made from one type of atom.
What is a proton?
A positively charged particle that makes up part of an atom.
What is a neutron?
A neutrally charged particles that makes up part of an atom
What is an electron?
A negatively charged particles that is part of an atom.
How many different types of atoms are there?
118
What is a chemical mixture?
Two or more substances not chemical bonded together which can be separate.
What is a chemical compound?
Two or more elements chemically bonded after a chemical reaction.
What are the five hints for a chemical reaction taking place?
1: Fizzing or bubbling
2: Change in colour
3: Change in odour
4: Change in temperature
5: A solid is formed
What determines what element something is?
The number of protons the atom has.
What are the reactants in a chemical reaction?
The materials you start with in a chemical reaction.
What are the products in a chemical reaction?
The materials you end with in a chemical reaction.
What does aqueous mean?
It means dissolved in water or a solution.
What is a word equation?
An equation that contains only words.
What does dissolving mean?
When a solute is broken down in a solvent to form a solution.
What does solute mean?
Typcally a solid that is dissolved to form a solutions but liquids and gasses can be solutes aswell.
What does solvent mean?
A solvent is any substance, usually liquid, which is capable of dissolving one or several substances, thus creating a solution.
What does solution mean?
A solution is where a solute is dissolved in a solvent.
What does soluble mean?
It can be dissolved.
What does insoluble mean?
It can’t be dissolved
What is the melting point of a substance?
The temperature at which the substance turns from a solid to a liquid and vice versa.
What is the boiling point of a substance?
The temperature at which the substance turns from a liquid to a gas and vice verse
What is distillation?
The process of separating two or more liquids using that fact they have different boiling points.
What is decanting?
The process of separating two or more liquids using that fact that they are immiscible.
What does immiscible mean?
When two liquids are incapable of forming a homogeneous mixture when mixed.
