- the cell is the basic unit of structure and function of all living organisms
- all cells arise from pre-existing cells by cell division

Robert Hooke - examined slices of cork under a microscope and coined the term “cells”
Matthias Schleiden - concluded that all plants are made of cells
Theodor Schwann - stated that all animals are made of cells
Rudolf Virchow - concluded that new cells come from existing cells
