C1 Topic 3&4 Flashcards
(38 cards)
Carbonate + Acid –>
Salt + H2O + CO2
Base + Acid –>
Salt + H2O
Metal + Acid –>
Salt + Hydrogen
3 types of acids as symbols
- HCl
- HNO3
- HSO4
Why does the stomach produce HCl?
To help with digestion - the enzymes work best in acidic environments
Also kills bacteria - no food poisoning
What is indigestion and how is it dealt with?
Too much HCl in the stomach
Indigestion tablets contain bases to neutralise the acid such as Calcium Carbonate
Metal oxides and Hydroxides produce what when reacted with acid and why?
Salt and H2O because they’re bases and the acid neutralises it
Symbol for
Calcium Oxide
Sodium Oxide
Potassium Oxide
CaO
NaO
KO

Test for chlorine
Turns DAMP blue litmus paper red then bleaches it white
Test for hydrogen
Squeaky pop lit splint in test tube
Test for CO2
Turns limewater cloudy
Test for Oxygen
Re-lights glowing splint
Electrolysis of table salt produces…
Chlorine
Three uses of chlorine…
Manufacture of bleach
Make poly(chlorethene) aka PVC
Treat water supplies
Electrolysis of water produces
Hydrogen and Oxygen
The positive rod in electrolysis is called
ANODE
Negative rod in electrolysis is called
Cathode
Cations - Anions
Positive - Negative
What are most metals found as
Ores
Pure metals when dug up
Gold is not reactive so it is by itself when you dig it up
Where are ores found
In the earths crust
