C1.1 Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a particle?
A tiny bit of matter
What is a particle?
A tiny bit of matter
What is the particle model?
Particle model describes how particles are arranged and how they move in solids, liquids and gases.
What is a physical change?
When a substance changes without becoming a new chemical.
No new substances are made
MOST physical changes are reversible
What is a chemical change?
New substances are formed when the original chemicals react.
Produces one or more new substances
Many are difficult to reverse/impossible
Physical change in particles
If a change in state, particles stay the same but their movement and arrangement change
Chemical change in particles
Particles break up then join together in different ways. This is why new substances are made.
Atoms
Smallest particles that make up a substance
Force between particles
Electrostatic forces of attraction between positive and negative charges
Weaker when further apart, stronger when closed
Stronger in solids, weaker in gases
Limitations of particle model
Doesn’t include:
Forces between particles
Size of particles
Distance between particles
