C1.1 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Why is oxygen an element?
Because it only contains oxygen atoms
What are protons, neutrons and electrons called?
Subatomic particles
How can you work out how many of each type of subatomic particle and atom has?
From its atomic number and mass number
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in an atom of an element
Why do atoms have no overall charge?
Because the number of electrons in an atom is the same as the number of protons
What is the mass number?
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
What are energy levels also known as?
Shells
What’s size shell has the lowest energy level?
The inner most (closest to the middle)
What size shells has the highest energy level?
Outer shell
How many electrons can the first energy level (shell) have?
1 or 2
How many electrons can the second energy level have?
Up to 8
How many electrons can the third energy level have?
Up to 8
How many electrons can the fourth energy level have?
1 or 2
What do atoms in a group in the periodic table have in common?
The have the same highest energy level (outer shell)
What group is alkali metals?
Group 1
What is group 0 called?
Noble gases
What is different about group 0 regarding the energy levels (shells)?
The highest occupied energy level (outer shell) of their atoms are full
What happens when elements react with each other?
Their atoms join together to form compounds
How do you form ions?
Metals and non-metals react together to form compounds, the compounds are made of ions.
What do compounds formed from reactions between non-metals consist of?
Molecules
What do you use to represent chemical reactions?
Word equations and balanced symbol equations
What are reactants?
The substances that react together
What are products?
The substances made
In a correctly balanced symbol equation…….
There are the same number of atoms of each of each element in the reactants and in the products
