C1.1 - how the earths atmosphere has changed over time Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are the three states of matter?
Solid
liquid
Gas
What happens when you add and remove energy?
Solid to liquid = melts
Liquid to Gas = evaporates
Gas to liquid = condensation
Liquid to Solid = freezes
Solid to Gas = sublimation
Gas to Solid = deposition
What is a liquid?
- not in a fixed position
- takes the shape of their containors
What are IM forces?
They are invisible forces that help hold things together not a bond
What are the rules for balancing equations?
- can’t add only multiply
- can’t change little numbers
- can only add big numbers
What is an exothermic reaction?
An exo-thermic reaction is a chemical reaction that gives out energy to its surroundings
What is an endothermic reaction?
An endothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that takes heat energy in from its surroundings
What is bond breaking?
It takes energy to break bonds, so bond-breaking is an endothermic + process
Every single reaction has an endothermic process, this is where the bonds in the reactants are broken, which uses a + sign
What is bond making?
Energy is released when new bonds are made, so bond-making is an exothermic - process.
It uses the - sign as energy is released from the system and transferred to surroundings
What is BMX?
Bond
Making
eXothermic
What is complete combustion?
is when a fuel (a hydrocarbon) is burned completely in excess oxygen
What are the products of complete combustion?
Carbon dioxide and water
What is incomplete combustion?
is when a fuel burns in a lack of oxygen
What are the products of incomplete combustion?
Carbon monoxide, carbon, and water
What is a hydrocarbon?
A hydrogen is a compound made entirely only from hydrogen (H2) and carbon (C) atoms
