Q

according to augustine: what happens to an infant baby who dies?

A
  • since babies are born with original sin, if they are not baptised they will receive eternal damnation
17
Q

what does baptism cleanse the recipient of according to augustine?

A

Removes original sin which was inherited from adam who brought sin into the world and enables christians to share in christs resurrection

18
Q

what does augustine compare infant baptism to?

A

circumcision as both are outward seals of an inward faith

19
Q

what is the main difference between zwingli and augustine on infant baptism?

A

for zwingli, baptism does not cause salvation, the water itself has no power to wash away sin: that power belongs to God alone. Baptism only symbolises salvation

20
Q

why did zwingli object to the anabaptists?

A

He insisted that requiring a believers baptism for salvation is a challenge to God’s sovereignty and has no precedent in scripture

21
Q

what is the point in infant baptism for zwingli?

A

It demonstrates christian unity , it can strengthen faith it symbolises salvation and it is a promise or oath made by the believer to God

22
Q

what were the two types of sin that augustine wrote about?

A

original sin- inherited from adam who brought sin into the world
personal sin-resulting from our state of sinfulness

23
Q

who was augustine?

A

he was an african bishop whose work on baptism was a response to the heresy of the donatists(insisted that clergy be morally faultless)

24
Q

what did augustine say about the role of the parents in infant baptism?

A
  • infants are presented for baptism by both the parents and the whole church
  • they cannot choose christ for themselves so parents respond on the childs behalf
25
what did zwingli think about the age people got baptised at?
- he wanted children to be instructed prior to baptism as had previously been a custom and he expressed regret that they were baptised at such a young age, before they could understand
26
who was Karl Barth?
swiss reformed protestant theologian
27
what did barth advocate for?
believers baptism
28
what is believers baptism?
the full immersion in water and then withdrawal from it again. this represents a direct threat to life followed by immediate deliverance which barth felt expressed what baptism represents better than sprinkling ( aspersion)
29
Did barth believe baptism actually brought about salvation?
- no he said it was a symbolic representation of a believers baptism in spirit - the believer spiritually dies and is brought back to life in christ and becomes inseparably part of christ in baptism of the spirit
30
what does barth say the difference between baptism of the spirit and baptism with water is?
-baptism of the spirit is only accomplished by jesus - baptism with water is a human action that is only a symbol or a copy of what God has done in a persons lfe, through his spirit, it does not cause salvation and is not a sacrament
31
what does barth claim about the church ?
- it was never given the right to mediate God's grace or dispense salvation as baptism is a human action - humans cannot decide who is to receive Gods grace and who is not
