according to augustine: what happens to an infant baby who dies?
- since babies are born with original sin, if they are not baptised they will receive eternal damnation
what does baptism cleanse the recipient of according to augustine?
Removes original sin which was inherited from adam who brought sin into the world and enables christians to share in christs resurrection
what does augustine compare infant baptism to?
circumcision as both are outward seals of an inward faith
what is the main difference between zwingli and augustine on infant baptism?
for zwingli, baptism does not cause salvation, the water itself has no power to wash away sin: that power belongs to God alone. Baptism only symbolises salvation
why did zwingli object to the anabaptists?
He insisted that requiring a believers baptism for salvation is a challenge to God’s sovereignty and has no precedent in scripture
what is the point in infant baptism for zwingli?
It demonstrates christian unity , it can strengthen faith it symbolises salvation and it is a promise or oath made by the believer to God
what were the two types of sin that augustine wrote about?
original sin- inherited from adam who brought sin into the world
personal sin-resulting from our state of sinfulness
who was augustine?
he was an african bishop whose work on baptism was a response to the heresy of the donatists(insisted that clergy be morally faultless)
what did augustine say about the role of the parents in infant baptism?
- infants are presented for baptism by both the parents and the whole church
- they cannot choose christ for themselves so parents respond on the childs behalf
