C2.1 Flashcards
(4 cards)
How solid materials differ
Different properties such as melting points, strength, stiffness, hardness and density
How do properties relate to the uses of matierals like plastic
Plastic polythene; flexible; plastic bags
Synthetic fibres; nylon; tough and water proof; climbing ropes
Rubbers; vulcanised; hard and flexible; conveyor belts
How does the effectiveness of a product link to materials made to make it
Carrier bags; used to be paper now polythene because it’s stronger and Water proof
Window frames made of polychloroethene as its unreactive and doesn’t rot
Natural and vulcanised rubber
Natural: very flexible & has a low melting point because little energy is needed to seperate molecules: strong covalent bonds
Vulcanised: rigid and hard to stretch as molecules won’t slide past each other
Need lots of energy to seperate
