Q

rules for naming compounds

A
  1. element that is furthest to the left comes first in the name (often these are metals), the name of this element DOES NOT CHANGE
  2. If there are two elements in the compound, then the second element will change its name ending to “-ide”
  3. If there are 3 elements in the compound and one of them is oxygen then the compound name will end in “-ate” or “-ite” (this represents the oxygen)

A

group : valency
1 = 1
2 = 2
3 = 3
4 = 4
5 = 3
6 = 2
7 = 1

Q

rule for ionic formulae?

A

the first element will be positive (+), second will be negative (-)

17
Q

where to find relative atomic mass?

A

on the periodic table! easy!

18
Q

how to find relative molecular mass?

A

using molecular formula mass, but still noted as Mr

add the relative atomic masses of the elements found (in periodic table). if there is two of the same element than multiply. ex. CO(2) = 12 + (2x16) = 44
