- divided N & S in agreeing on platform & pres candidate; S retain FILMORE (northerner)
- N: general winfield scott (southerner); pol inexperienced but man of integrity & ability & whigs had 2x won GE w military war heroes- agreed on pres nomination, but not on platform, so virtually said nothing
