C6 Electrolysis Flashcards
(32 cards)
List the halide ions
Fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide and astatide
What is electrolysis?
The process that uses electricity to break down ionic compounds into elements
What do ionic compounds have to be in order to be electrolysed?
Molten or in water
What is the substance that is broken down called?
The electrolyte
What are electrodes made of?
An inert substance
What is the positive electrode called?
Anode
What is the negative electrode called?
Cathode
During electrolysis which electrode do positive ions move towards?
Cathode
During electrolysis which electrode do negative ions move towards?
Anode
What happens when ions reach the electrode?
They lose their charge and become atoms or molecules
Which electrode are metal elements produced at?
Cathode
Which electrode are non-metal elements produced at?
Anode
At the cathode, if two elements can be produced, which one will be formed?
The less reactive one
What ions are attracted to the cathode?
Positively charged metal ions and hydrogen ions
What is the order of discharge at the anode?
Halide ions > hydroxide ions > all other negative ions
What is given off at the anode when hydroxide ions are discharged?
Oxygen gas
Where do you get aluminium from?
The ore bauxite, which is mainly aluminium oxide
Why must aluminium be extracted using electrolysis?
Because it is more reactive than carbon
What lowers the melting point of aluminium oxide?
Cryolite
During the extraction of aluminium, what is produced at the cathode?
Aluminium metal
During the extraction of aluminium, what is produced at the anode?
Oxygen gas
Why do the carbon anodes regularly need replacing?
Because the react with the oxygen to form carbon dioxide gas
What is the half equation for the electrolysis of aluminium at the cathode?
Al^3+ + 3e- > Al (reduction)
What is the half equation for the electrolysis of aluminium at the anode?
2O^2- > O2 + 4e- (oxidation)
