C6.1 start Flashcards
what elements do plants need
nitrogen
phosphorus
potassium
nitrogen deficiency causes
poor growth
yellow leaves
phosphorus deficiency causes
poor root growth
discoloured leaves
potassium deficiency causes
poor fruit growth
discoloured leaves
what is haber process used to make
fertilisers
hydrogen is
natural gas
nitrogen is obtained from
air , liquified air or steam
what is required for haber process
high temperatures
catalyst
and high pressure
how to make potassium sulfate in a lab
-add dilute potassium hydroxide (KOH) in a flask with phenolphthalein
- add dilute H2SO4 from burette or pipette until solution changes from pink to colourless
- add activated charcoal to remove phenolphthalein
- warm filtrate with bunsen burner to leave potassium sulfate
-leave to dry
how to make ammonium sulfate
same as potassium
- add ammonia solution
-just be careful not to inhale ammonia gas
-use methyl orange indicator (yellow to red)
- add extra ammonia solution to ensure reaction is complete
batch process
small amount, one at a time
continuous process
large amounts and run all the time
compare industrial and laboratory production of fertilisers
in lab substances are brought from chemical manufacturers
in fertilisers factories they start with raw materials which must be purified before used
