C8 Flashcards
(33 cards)
What is the most abundant protein in the body?
albumin
What are the rest of proteins (excluding albumin) known as?
globulins
What causes an increase in total protein concentration?
Increased synthesis , artefactual stasis and dehydration
What causes a decrease in total protein concentration?
decreased synthesis (malabsorption), water overload , increased excretion and increased catabolism
What is protein electrophoresis?
- Amino acids could be negative or positive
- Migrate & different speeds in electric field to positive electrode
- Albumins rapid and globulins slowly
What is the order of proteins in electrophoresis (from positive to negative electrode)
- Albumin
- Alpha-1 area
- Alpha-2 area
- Beta area
- Lamda area
Name an Alpha-1 globulin
Alpha-1 antitrypsin
Name Alpha-2 globulins
Haptoglobin
Caeruloplasmin
Alpha-2 macroglobulin
Name Beta-globulins
- Transferrin
- Beta-2 microglobulin
Name a Lamda-globulin
Immunoglobulin G, A, M, E, D
What is the function of IgG?
protects extravascular space
What is the function of IgA?
Protects body surfaces - dimer
What is the function of IgM?
Protects blood stream - pentamer
What is the function of IgE?
Involved in hypersensitivity reactions
What is the function of IgD?
little known
List characteristics of albumin
- 80% plasma oncotic pressure
- Transports: BR, fatty acids, Ca, hormones and many drugs
- Nutritional half-life of 20 days
What causes hypoalbuminaemia?
- decreased synthesis
- increased volume of distribution (dilution)
- increased excretion or catabolism
What causes hyperalbuminaemia?
Acute dehydration
What are the consequences of low albumin?
- Oedema
- Decreased binding and increase toxicity
- Decrease in total serum calcium
List characteristics of Alpha1- antitrypsin
- Protease inhibitor
- Most important inhibitor of leucocyte elastase found in vascular endothelium
When do Alpha1-antitrypsin levels increase or decrease?
- increase: acute phase reaction
- decrease: in protein losing conditions
List characteristics of Alpha2-macroglobulin
Protease inhibitor
When do Alpha2-macroglobulin levels increase?
Protein losing conditions: increased synthesis and relative retention by glomerulus
List characteristics of Haptoglobin
- Alpha 2 fraction
- Binds free Hb → removed by RES
- Prevents loss of Hb and Fe in urine
- Prevents lipid peroxidation by Hb
- Anti&inflammatory
