C8 Flashcards
What is a rate of chemical reaction?
How fast the reactants are changed into products
What is the slowest rate of reaction?
Rusting of iron and chemical weathering
Whats an example of a moderate speed reaction?
Metal magnesium reacting with acid to produce gentle steam of bubbles
What is burning?
A fast reaction
How can you find the speed of a reaction?
- By recording the product formed
- The amount of product used over a certain time
What does steeper the line on a graph mean?
The faster the rate of the reaction
What happens overtime on the graph?
The line becomes less steep as the reactants are used up
What should particles react with in order to react?
Enough energy
What does more collisions mean?
Faster the reaction
What does doubling the frequency mean?
Double the rate
What do particles need to break bonds?
Activasion energy
What are the 4 things that affect rates of reaction?
- Temperature
- Surface area
- The concentration of a solution or the pressure of gas
- Catalyst
What increases the rate lf reaction?
More collisions
What happens when increasing the concentration?
- When the pressure is increased there is the same number of particles in the same space
- This means more frequent collisions as its in a smaller space
What does increasing the surface area do?
- If a piece is a solid breaking it up in small pieces will increase the surface area to volume ratio
- This means same volume theyll have more area to work on
