C9: Crude Oils Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is an atom?
Smallest part of an element that can exist and carries a neutral charge. It is made up of protons (p+) and neutrons (n0) found in the nucleus and electrons (e-) in shells.
What is an element?
Made of the same type of atom.
Found in the periodic table in order of increasing atomic number (proton number)
What is a compound?
2 or more different elements chemically bonded.
What is a covalent bond?
Shared pair of electron between elements
What is crude oil?
Mixture of different length hydrocarbons
What is a mixture?
2 or more substances that are not chemically bonded
What is a hydrocarbon?
Molecule made of only hydrogen and carbon atoms
What is a fraction?
Hydrocarbons with similar length chains
What is distillation?
Evaporation followed by condesation
What is fractional distillation?
Repeated evaporation and condensation to separate mixture into different fractions.
Alkanes
Saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula Cn2n+2
Temperature gradient
Hot at the bottom cool at the top
