A coercive power base is founded on coercing or forcing group members to complete specific actions or tasks - Rarely used but may involve enforcing safety rules or removing disruptive members.

A referent power base is one where the leader tries to connect with his or her fellow group members and builds an effective relationship with them - Popular or charismatic members can influence decisions informally

An expert power base is one meaning the power the leader has is due to his or her knowledge and capabilities - Members with technical knowledge (e.g. electrical skills) are looked up to.

Autocratic
Dictatorial and authoritarian, Strict and militant, task orientated and command group to follow orders - Might occur when enforcing safety protocols or managing finances strictly.

Work with fellow group members to reach goals, Group members have a voice and input into decision making- Most common. Leaders encourage group input in projects and decisions.

Relaxed and laid back, Limited control- Useful in creative or self-paced projects where members manage their own time and work
