Cafs AT2 Flashcards
(34 cards)
Support groups
They offer a safe, informal environment for men to share experiences and talk about mental health, illness, grief, or retirement transitions. Peer support is central, especially in promoting wellbeing and reducing social isolation.
Leisure and Recreational Groups
Men come together to engage in shared hobbies such as woodworking, metalwork, gardening, or model making. This encourages creativity, learning, and enjoyment in a relaxed setting.
Community Groups
Men’s Sheds often undertake community projects (e.g., building furniture for schools, restoring public spaces). They connect with local councils, charities, and schools, fostering civic responsibility and pride.
Cultural Groups
While not culture-specific, some Sheds embrace cultural inclusivity by recognising diverse backgrounds and traditions. In some areas, Aboriginal Men’s Sheds incorporate Indigenous knowledge and practices, supporting cultural continuity.
Gender-Specific Groups
Men’s Sheds are intentionally male-only spaces. They provide a unique environment where men feel more comfortable expressing themselves, especially on topics they may avoid elsewhere (e.g. health, loneliness).
Educational/Skill-Based Groups
Members learn or teach practical skills like tool use, safety, repairs, or technology. Knowledge sharing is informal, but extremely valuable—especially for older men or retirees seeking purpose.
Voluntary Groups
Participation is voluntary; members give time and energy without expecting payment. This promotes altruism and boosts individual self-worth.
Locality/geography
Men’s Sheds are localised; men attend a shed close to their home.
Shared interest/common goal
Members share interests (e.g. carpentry, gardening) and health goals.
Security and safety
Offers a safe space for men, especially retirees or widowers.
Social interaction
Reduces loneliness and isolation. Promotes friendship and connection.
Specific need
Meets men’s health needs, particularly mental health and wellbeing.
Gender
Specifically for men, helping them express themselves in safe ways.
Task-oriented
A project leader or coordinator overseeing a woodwork project.
Socio-emotional

- Chairperson or facilitator

- Peer supporter (e.g., mental health advocate)

Greater connection leads to more involvement and responsibility.
