Canal Systems and Components Flashcards
TRA00106
Draw the canal structure.
Draw the canal overhead.
Where is Door 51 in relation to the Canal?
Door 51 is located between the reactor and the storage canal sections.
Draw the Reactor Vessel/Canal interface.
Describe the function of the Transfer Tube.
The transfer tube/drop chute swings over against the reactor vessel to receive the discharged item, then swings back into the canal so that the item can be lifted out of the transfer tube.
What is the ATR canal made of?
The canal is constructed of reinforced concrete with a stainless steel liner.
What are the 5 basic areas of the canal facility?
Working Canal, T Section, East Storage, West Storage, ATRC.
What is the pH control band for canal water?
5.0 to 6.2
What is the normal pH operating band for canal water?
5.1 to 5.6
What are the general functions of the ATR canal?
1) Storage of ATR FAs
2) Storage of irradiated core and experiment components
3) Providing area for handling rad material
4) Loading/unloading facility for fuel/experiments/isotope casks.
What is the function of the ATR transfer tube?
Transfer fuel, small components, and capsules between the reactor and canal.
What motive force moves the Transfer Tube?
LDW hydraulic pressure.
Where is the transfer tube located?
45-ft deep section of the canal north of the reactor vessel.
What are the functions of Door 51?
1) Structure of TSR required Building Confinement.
2) Provides access between Reactor and Canal during outage.
What is the function of the Experiment Transfer Station?
Enables NR experiment casks to be loaded and unloaded without getting them wet.
What facilities/equipment are located in the working canal and T Section?
1) RML Wire Scanner
2) Fuel Element Inspection Fixture
3) Dummy Fuel Element Storage Grid
What are the different types of Experiment Storage Cans?
1) Large
2) Standard
3) MUCH
4) Clean
What is stored in the experiment holders?
1) NR Loop Experiment Cans
2) Loop Flow Tubes
3) Loop Inpile Tubes
What are the functions of the East Storage Canal?
1) Irradiated Fuel Storage (>276W heat gen)
2) Dry Gamma Facility
3) Long term storage of Beryllium Blocks in Deep Section
What prevents irradiated fuel storage grids from falling into the deep section?
Portable steel barrier.
What are the functions of the short bulkheads located on each side of the irradiated fuel storage area?
1) Isolate the irradiated fuel storage from the rest of canal.
2) Maintains 1-ft of water over the top of the fuel storage grids.
How many seals are installed on each short bulkhead?
Each short bulkhead has two independent inflatable seals.
What is the air source to inflate the short bulkhead seals?
Plant air.
Draw ATR Canal Ion Exchange System.
