What is hyperplasia?

Enlarged tissue due to too many cells

In which types of organs is hyperplasia more common?

Hormonal organs - thyroid, breast and endometrium

What is hypertrophy?

An increase in cell size

Hypertrophy occurs commonly in the heart in which tissue?

The myocardium. The myocytes are enlarged due to an increased pressure load.

How could you test if a heart was hypertrophic?

Weigh it. It will have an increased mass.

What is atrophy?

This is a reduction in the size of an organ due to a reduction in number and size of cells.

What is hypoplasia?

The reduced size of an organ which never developed to full size.

Which type of tissue abnormality is irreversible?

Hypoplasia

What is metaplasia?

Altered differentiation in tissues.

What is neoplasia?

An abnormal mass of tissue.

What are the behavioural types of neoplasia?

Benign.
Malignant- cancerous.

What do benign cells look like?

They look very similar to those in the organ. Very little differentiation within the tissue.
