Why was Canterbury in decline before the Walloons came

A

Canterbury had been a major place for pilgrims to visit the shrine
of a murdered archbishop- St. Thomas Becket.

The reformation put an end to Catholic practices of shrines to
saints & his was destroyed. Homes for visitors stood empty.
