The verbs preferir and querer express preference and desire for things when followed by nouns, but they are also often used to express preference and desire for actions when followed by a ver or the infinitive

Yo prefiero estudiar en la residencia pero mi compañero de cuarto quiere invitar a sus amigos a mirar una película
(I prefer to study in my home but my friend but my roommate wants to invite his friends to watch a movie)
