1
Q

Anti-lock brakes will take effect when

A

Maximum brake pressure has been applied.

2
Q

You are on a long, downhill slope. What should you do to help control the speed of your vehicle?

A

Select a lower gear.

3
Q

When approaching a right hand bend you should keep well to the left. Why is this?

A

To improve the view of the road. It will give an earlier view around the bend and enable to see any hazards sooner and reduce the risk of a collision with an oncoming vehicle that may have drifted over the centre line while taking the bend.

4
Q

What are the factors that can affect stopping distances?

A

The type, model and condition of your vehicle, road and weather conditions and your reaction time.

5
Q

Overall stopping distance is made up of thinking and braking distances. On a good dry road surface with good brakes and tyres. What is the typical BRAKING distance from 50mph?

A

39 metres (125feet)

6
Q

What is the overall stopping distance?

A

Thinking distance + braking distance

7
Q

At 50 mph what is your OVERALL STOPPING DISTANCE?

A

15 metres thinking distance + 38 metres braking distance = 53 metres.

8
Q

What is the most common cause of skidding?

A

Driver error.

9
Q

When does a squid happens?

A

When the driver changes the speed or direction of the vehicle so suddenly that the tyres can’t keep their grip on the road.

10
Q

Skidding is mainly caused by

A

The driver. Always drive according to weather/road conditions.

11
Q

If your steering feels heavy, or pulls to one side, a possible cause could be

A

Under inflated tyres.

Your tyres should be inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended level - you can find information about this in your vehicle handbook. If you don’t have a vehicle handbook check your make and model to search for information on the Internet. Underinflated tyres can cause the steering to feel heavy or to pull to one side in normal driving and/or when braking. Underinflated tyres can also lead to higher fuel consumption.

12
Q

Why is travelling in neutral for long distances (knowing as coasting) wrong?

A

There is no engine braking.
Coast a little when changing gear can’t be avoided but must be kept to a minimum

Try to look ahead and read the road.
Plan your approach to junctions
Select the correct gear in good time
It will give control needed to deal with any hazards that occur.

13
Q

You are about to go down a steep hill. To control the speed of the vehicle you should

A

Select a lower gear to give more engine braking control.

14
Q

When going down a steep hill you should

A

Select a lower gear

Use the breaks carefully.

15
Q

Your anti-lock brakes warning light stays on. You should

A

Have the brakes checked immediately.

Consult the vehicle handbook or garage before driving the vehicle. Only drive to a garage if it is safe to do so. If you are not sure get expert help.

16
Q

You are driving a vehicle fitted with antilock brakes. You need to stop in an emergency. You should apply the foot brake.

A

Rapidly and firmly.
