Q

What is the classification of CHOs?

A

Sugars:
- Monosaccharides: trioses (C3H6O3), tetroses (C4H8O4), pentoses (C5H10O5), hexoses (C6H12O6) and heptoses (C7H14O7) – (depending on the number of carbon atoms present in the molecule)
- Oligosaccharides: Disaccharides (Sucrose, Lactose, Maltose, Cellobiose); Trisaccharides and Tetrasaccharides

Non-sugars:
- Polysaccharides (Homoglycans: glucans -> starch. gycogen, cellulose; fructans -> inulin; galactans… and Heteroglycans: hemicellulose, pectic substances, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin)
- complex CHOs: glycolipids, glyscoproteins
