Q

what are the major categories of carbon?

A

Inorganic – CO2 (carbon dioxide), H2CO3 (carbonic acid), HCO3- (bicarbonate ion), and CO3-2 (carbonate ion). Dissolved (DIC) or
particulate ) –Limestone/Dolomite rock, also coal and shale.
Organic – all living and dead organisms, fecal matter etc. and dissolved organic carbon.
* May be Particulate Organic Matter (POM)
* often vastly more dead organic matter than living.
* may be thousands of organic substances
* Origin of aquatic OM = catchment soils, wetland habitats and PS

Q

autochthonous sources of DOM

A

in
situ production by algae and plants and the direct consumption
of these internal primary producers by herbivores - the grazing
pathway

Q

How does inorganic carbon enter water

A

Respiration
* Presence in incoming water (precipitation, erosion, volcanic activity)
* Absorbed from the atmosphere
